Al Gore's groundbreaking film "An Inconvenient Truth" will be shown at the Barton Evangelical Church on Barton Road on Wednesday 30th April. The theme of the film is climate change and it will be followed by discussion and debate on the global, national and local perspectives.
If you would like more details about the film showing please contact Alan Green at 01227 478678 or aldi@tinyworld.co.uk. You can see a trailer for the film at http://www.climatecrisis.net/trailer/
The Lib Dems have been the most environmental Party for a number of years, and our Environment Spokesman Chris Huhne MP leads us in pushing for a green tax shift - forcing a change away from polluting, and towards reducing, recycling and reuse. But we can't just have good national policies. We have got to set examples locally and even personally.
There are lots of steps we can take - for instance, changing light bulbs for energy efficient bulbs (now half price at Tescos!), keeping our car tyres are at the right pressure, turning down our thermostats and more.
If you are interested in doing your bit to ease global warming, here is a list of 10 things you can do:
Change a light - replacing one traditional light bulb with a compact fluorescent light will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
Drive less - walk, bike, carpool or take train more often. You'll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don't drive.
Recycle more - you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.
Check tyres - keeping to proper tyre inflation can improve your car mileage. Every gallon saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere!
Use less hot water - it takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by installing low flow shower heads and washing clothes in warm water.
Avoid products with a lot of packaging - you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you can cut your rubbish by 10%.
Adjust your thermostat - moving your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
Plant a tree - a single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime
Turn off electronic devices - simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo and computer when you're not using them will save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
