Guy Voizey congratulated Michael Steed on his election to Canterbury City Council. He replaces Lee Glendon, who resigned to accept a job in Berkshire.
"Michael is a local resident with many years experience of campaigning on local environmental issues. He brings more experience to an already high quality team of Liberal Democrat councillors on Canterbury City Council.
"That the voters of Barton elected Michael with an increased majority over a year ago is thanks to the hard work of our councillors, Paula Vickers, Adam Parsons and Lee Glendon over the last year. When given a choice between a local Liberal Democrat campaigner to carry on this work and another Tory, the Barton electorate expressed a very clear view.
"This election also marks the end of the Labour Party in Canterbury. When the party of government cannot even find a candidate for a local by-election, it is clear it has reached its sell-by date.
