The council has just spent a fortune on a consultation process about the future of the Wincheap Estate. It included a forest of paper amongst which was a 1,008 page ring binder for each councillor. Overall a stack of paper which I calculate to be the height of a double-decker Park and Ride bus.
I have sat through this process for eight years both as a Wincheap councillor and a member of the Wincheap Steering Group. I was hopeful that we might be getting somewhere. The Fourth Park and Ride was being considered for inclusion within the redevelopment area clearly marked with a red line on all the plans.
Last week, out of the blue, one of our more popular playing fields has been earmarked. A greenfield site and protected public open space. The first I knew of it was a horrified email from the Thanington Residents' Association. This site is not in the redevelopment area. It has never been in any of the consultation documents, nor on any of the plans. It makes an utter farce of the consultation process and renders it a meaningless, scandalous waste of time and council tax payers' money.
This is not just moving the goal posts. It is selling them off and concreting over the pitch. Anyone considering this idea should be put on the transfer list immediately.
