Council Cave-in To Opposition Calls To Freeze Parking Charges To Help Local Businesses

January 27, 2009 5:14 AM

(And Thanington Park & Ride Plan is finally Scrapped!)

Lib Dems on Canterbury City Council are celebrating after forcing the Tory administration into a stunning U-turn on Parking Charges.

"As recently as last week the Tories were still putting forward 10% increases in daily parking charges across the city." Said Lib Dem Leader Alex Perkins. "We have consistently argued that any increase in parking charges in the present climate was likely to damage local businesses and so at meeting after meeting since they announced the proposed increases in November have been calling for a total freeze in charges across the city."

"The Conservative executive have at last seen the idiocy of their schoolboy approach to simple economics and have agreed to accept our proposals. Helping them out of their mess was the least we could do under the circumstances."

This news came on the same day as the Conservatives also finally had to concede that the Thanington Park and Ride plan is to be scrapped. (As claimed by Cllr Perkins in December)

"This is a great day for all who care about Canterbury and want to see it protected from the Conservative's insane plans."
