Over the last 30 years, our country has become more divided, with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. The unfair tax system doesn't help, with the poorest 20% paying more of their income in tax than the richest 20%. In response, the Liberal Democrats plan to cut the level of income tax paid by low and middle income families by up to £700 a year.
"Our tax system is unfair", said Guy Voizey, parliamentary spokesman for Canterbury and Whitstable Liberal Democrats. "Recent increases in tax hit people on low and middle incomes much harder than the richest 20%. Increases in council tax are especially hard for those on fixed incomes, such as pensioners."
"We have to close the unfair loopholes used by the rich to avoid tax and use this money to cut taxes for those who need it most. This policy has two advantages. It will help to cut the gap between rich and poor which has grown under Labour and, by putting cash in the pockets of people who need it most, it will help get the economy moving again."
