Time for 20mph zones to be introduced in all residential areas in Canterbury and Whitstable

December 16, 2009 4:13 PM

Guy Voizey, parliamentary spokesman for Canterbury and Whitstable Liberal Democrats, has welcomed the Department for Transport's announcement that they will encourage councils to introduce 20mph zones in residential areas. He is calling on Kent Highways to introduce 20mph zones in all residential areas in Canterbury and Whitstable as soon as possible.

"All evidence shows the risk of injury and death is much lower when traffic is restricted to 20mph in residential areas," said Guy Voizey. "This new guidance from the Department for Transport should be acted on without delay, as part of the ongoing effort to reduce death and injury to pedestrians and cyclists on our roads."

"It is vital that everything possible is done to make our roads safer for all road users, but especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Introducing 20mph zones in residential areas is one such measure. This will benefit individuals, including children, who will remain fitter if they choose to walk or cycle to work or school. It will also benefit the environment as fewer car journeys will be made."
