Loitering Lorries Litter A2 Lay-bys

"It makes me ashamed to be local" is how Lib Dem campaigner Mike Sole feels every time that he drives past the lay-bys on the A2. "It is disgusting that the mess has been allowed to grow to this level. Don't the local authorities care about how our district looks?"

Former City Councillor Mr Sole had successful campaigned for litter cleans of the A2 in the past but in his view the situation is now much worse. "Litter attracts litter and the lorry drivers that park up night after night on these lay-bys must be a major contributor to this eyesore," says Mr Sole

"The problem is exacerbated be the fact that there are not adequate litter facilities. How difficult can it be to have large waste bins in every lay-by that can then be emptied weekly by the City Council, and at the same time any stray rubbish collected from the lay-by verges? This should be a condition of the City Council's waste collection contract."

Mr Sole, a parish councillor in Bridge is concerned that the appalling state of the lay-bys creates a terrible impression of the district, which has a knock on effect to economic growth and leisure activities. "If you are selling a house you tidy up the front garden. Canterbury's front garden is a litter strewn lay-by of filth that attracts no one," he added.
