KCC cuts which will close Riverside Children’s Centre

December 13, 2017 8:30 PM

Ida"The Conservatives running Kent County Council want to close the Riverside Children's Centre at Kingsmead in Canterbury" says Cllr Ida Linfield.

"The centre provides on-site health visitor and midwifery clinics and is amongst among the busiest in Kent - with 1890 and 1024 visits each last year. It provides a vital service for local families."

"I learnt at the beginning of December that KCC were thinking of cuts which will close Riverside Children's Centre - but it was all 'restricted information', which cannot be discussed publicly. At a meeting of the Children's Young People & Education Committee I argued strongly against this proposal and I was able to persuade KCC to at the very least contact Canterbury City Council who run the services on their behalf" added Ida.

"It seems the County Council just want to rush this through as quickly and quietly as possible with, absolutely no consultation whatsoever. I believe that the Conservative Leader of Canterbury City Council has now contacted KCC to protest. As a Lib Dem I am really pleased that to have some support from local Conservatives. However, the other Canterbury County Councillor on the committee, also a Tory, voted in favour of closing Riverside."

"The final decision is to be taken by the Tory Portfolio Holder at KCC who is Roger Gough. Please email your objections direct to him at Join our find ten campaign too - which is to find 10 of your friends who dislike this closure as much as we do and ask them to email in too! "
