Green bin collections suspended until March

December 19, 2018 10:37 AM
As councillors we are usually in the front line when it comes to complaints and problems. Quite right too. We were elected to try to help people. So small surprise that several of us have had complaints about garden waste collections.
The Conservatives have decided to tell SERCO to stop collecting garden waste until March. This means anyone doing winter pruning, clearing up leaves, or garden maintenance won't get the green waste removed.
This is despite the recent decision to pay SERCO an extra £140,000 for an improved service!
The Council claims that there is less green waste at this time of year compared with the peak in June. 320 tons in January compared with 1650 tons in June. We are not surprised there are peaks and troughs but this will mean around 600 tons of green waste will not be collected.
So what will happen to it? Either people will put it in their cars and drive it to the recycling centre or they will put it in their black bins. If everyone chose to drive to the recycling centre that's probably 100,000 unnecessary car journeys. If they choose to put it in their black bins then that's 600 tons of recycling into landfill. Either way this is penny wise and pound foolish. And we won't even mention flytipping.
The Lib Dems voted against giving SERCO more money in the first place. But to give SERCO more money for a reduced service shows how much the Conservatives understand about money management.
