Canterbury & Coastal Liberal DemocratsAt the council meeting on 25 April the Conservatives put forward a motion to get improvements made to mobile phone coverage in Canterbury. All well and good you may say. But why wait until a few days before the election to put forward this plan?
The Conservatives then went on to talk about and to promote 5G which has a couple of important question marks attached to it. It relies on a high frequency focused signal that may be harmful to both people and wildlife. 5G is also technically linked to HUAWEI, a Chinese company about which many in government have serious security concerns. Given these reservations, Lib Dem Cllrs Nick Eden-Green and Michael Dixey said the motion should be amended to ensure that people in Canterbury are at least consulted before any plans go ahead.
The Conservatives block voted the amendment down. Once more they displayed their utter refusal to consult with local people.
After the meeting Nick said, 'I'm not saying better mobile coverage isn't wanted or that 5G is or is not the answer. But it is controversial and on any issue of this sort we absolutely must consult before we take action. That was all my amendment sought to do. Once more the Conservatives refuse to engage, or even talk to local people.'
